White Pearl Shrimp description and sexual dimorphism

The White Pearl shrimp grows small and has a maximum length of 25 millimetres. The shrimp is white or translucent, and in you can see the ovaries through their abdomen. It would seem unsightly, but it is especially well emphasized by the lush green vegetation. Males are easily different from females: females have a transparent body and you can see the ovaries, which are located on top of the chewing stomach. Females also grow larger than males and females have visible white eggs. The life span of the White Pearl Shrimp is 2 years.

White Pearl Shrimp Environment

White pearl shrimps are very hardy and great for beginner aquarists. Although it is quite hardy shrimp, it should be noted that shrimps overall are more delicate than regular fish when it comes to water conditions. The active reaction of the environment should not exceed 7.5 pH. And the temperature of the water 20-28° degrees. In aquariums White Pearls behave adequately and very calmly. It is not recommended to contain aggressive fish in one tank with shrimp, because the shrimp will be eaten.

But if there are fast and aggressive fish in the fish tank, shrimp will become more secretive and passive. The minimum aquarium volume for shrimps is 10-30 liters, as in small aquariums it will be difficult to create and maintain biological balance, if you are a complete beginner.

Shrimps are constantly moving along the bottom of the aquarium in search of something to eat. The aquarium should have a large enough number of aquarium plants and especially Java Moss. Make sure that the aquarium does not contain copper in various ways, as it is a shrimp toxin. The soil and the aquarium itself should be standard for Neocardine shrimps and note that you will have to buy a group of 15-20 individuals.

White Shrimp reproduction

One strong characteristic of this type of shrimp is its rapid maturation. By the time they are 3 months old, shrimps become sexually mature and multiply like rabbits. A sexually mature female will have a white spot on top, indicating that the young generation on the traverse looks like unfertilized caviar. After the molting process, the female shrimp shifts all the eggs under the tail. The fertilized caviar is immediately visible in the abdominal sac. A month later, half a hundred small shrimps are born from white testicles and are ready for a difficult independent life.

Unlike other members of the Neocardine genus, White Pearl Shrimp do not have a larval stage and young individuals develop like ordinary adults. During the first week, the youngsters look almost transparent, which makes them difficult to see, as they are constantly hiding. As they grow older, they become snow-white. If the conditions are right, the females will almost always crawl pregnant and you will harvest every month and a half. I have the same situation with the red cherry, which breeds to ugliness quickly.
